NICE TO MEET YOU!
What is a registered social worker/therapist?
Meadows Therapy offers services by registered/licensed social work clinicians.
Social work clinicians are qualified mental health professionals who offer counselling and psychotherapy to individuals and families. Social workers utilize the professional use of self to enhance social, psychosocial or biopsychosocial functioning of individuals, couples, families and communities. In other words, social work clinicians can help you address psychological, emotional, behavioural and/or social challenges that affect your quality of life. These challenges include (but are not limited to) trauma, family conflict, addiction, illness, life transitions, grief or situational stressors such as divorce or losing a job. Social workers always practice from a holistic, person-in-environment model; meaning we strive to understand how your environment (past and present) has contributed to who you are and to the challenges you face on a daily basis. We use this understanding to help you function in a healthier way within your relationships and other social contexts.
While social work clinicians in Manitoba assess mental health, they cannot provide formal diagnoses.
What sets social work clinicians apart from other counsellors and therapists is that we are bound by a unique set of ethics rooted in social justice. We strive to be allies to marginalized groups and advocate for equal rights for all human beings. We understand how intersecting forms of oppression affect mental health. We have the highest respect for client rights and pride ourselves on developing a strong therapeutic alliance with you.
Social workers have a strong knowledge base in theories of biological, psychological and social development, diversity and cultural competency, interpersonal relationships, family and group dynamics, mental disorders, addictions, impacts of illness, trauma or injury and the effects of the physical, social and cultural environment.
In the near future, Meadows Therapy will offer services from student therapists. These students are in their last year of graduate school attaining their Master’s Degree in Social Work and practice under the supervision of a Registered Social Worker. Students are required to have prior experience in providing mental health services.
Meet Erika Meadows
It is a pleasure to meet you! I am a Registered Social Worker and I began my professional social work journey 9 years ago.
I have a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with a major in Women’s and Gender Studies, a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree and a Master’s of Social Work (MSW) degree. I am currently in my third year of the Ph.D. program in Social Work researching critical mental health practices with those who have experienced sexual violence.
I specialize in providing therapeutic services to those affected by trauma and it’s various manifestations such as anxiety, depression, emotional regulation, grief, relationship issues, self-esteem/self-worth issues, etc. I am passionate about helping clients empower themselves to heal from past traumas and then claim or re-claim their inherent value and self-worth and live healthy, happy, and confident lives. While I offer services for a variety of trauma, I am especially knowledgable in treating individuals who have experienced sexual violence.
I take several post-graduate trainings every year so that I can offer the most effective interventions to my clients. I am trained in traditional and trauma-focused CBT, all of the available eye movement therapies including EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, and Brainspotting, and other evidence-based modalities. I am currently becoming certified in Somatic Experiencing and am particularly passionate about healing trauma through somatic therapy.
